Taebaek is located in the southern part of Gangwon-do, and is a resort city for highland sightseeing as the center of leisure sports of the Pan East Sea Rim (Russia, Japan, and China). The northern side and eastern side border with Samcheok-si; the western side borders with Jeongseon-gun and Yeongwol-gun; and the southern side borders with Bonghwa-gun of Gyeongsangbuk-do. The adjacent cities of this highland city are all in the scope of influence. The city is approachable through National Roads 31, 35, and 38, which are connected to Yeongdong and Jungang Expressways. It is also connected by railroads through Yeongdong Line and Taebaek Line.
